What a Caravan Service Covers (and Why It Matters)

A caravan service is scheduled inspection and maintenance work on your caravan, campervan or motorhome. The goal is to keep the rig safe, legal, warranty-compliant and reliable on the road. A standard service covers the wear items (bearings, brakes, seals) and the compliance items (gas, electrical, water) in one booking, along with a full safety check of the vehicle.

Servicing matters for more than just mechanical reliability. Most caravan insurance policies expect the vehicle to be in a roadworthy condition. Factory warranties require routine servicing to stay valid. Resale value is affected by service history. And the safety consequences of a failed wheel bearing or brake fault on a caravan at highway speed are serious enough that annual servicing is worth doing even if you only travel occasionally.

As a baseline we recommend a full service every 12 months regardless of kilometres, with a shorter pre-trip inspection before long trips. Higher-use rigs (full-timers, frequent travellers, caravans over 10,000 km per year) benefit from a kilometre-based schedule as well. Caravans returning to use after extended storage should have a full service before the first trip.

What's Included in a Standard Caravan Service

Our standard caravan service covers every system on a caravan or RV that requires periodic inspection or maintenance. Any additional repair work or upgrades uncovered during the service are quoted separately, so you always know what's service and what's extra work.

Wheel Bearings

Inspect, clean, repack with fresh grease, adjust preload and replace if worn. Bearings are one of the most important items to service annually, even on low-use caravans.

Brakes & Brake Magnets

Inspect brake linings, check magnet condition, adjust brakes and test operation at the hand controller. Brake faults are a top failure mode on older caravans.

Chassis, Suspension & Axles

Visual inspection of the chassis and drawbar, bolt torque check, shackle condition and bush condition on leaf-sprung setups.

Tow Hitch & Jockey Wheel

Inspection, lubrication, lock operation check, jockey wheel wind and safety chain condition.

12V & 240V Electrical

Battery state-of-health test, charging system check, RCD test on the 240V circuit, outlet testing throughout. Licensed electrician on site.

Solar & Battery Bank

Solar controller operation test, battery voltage and charge check, cabling and connection inspection, panel cleaning if required.

Gas System

LPG leak test, regulator inspection, appliance operation check (cooktop, fridge, heater, hot water) and gas compliance certification where due.

Water System

Fresh and grey water pump test, tank inspection for leaks, tap and fitting check, hot water system test and filtration check.

Appliances

Fridge, cooktop, rangehood, air-conditioner, heater, TV and audio-visual operational check. Any faults flagged in the service report.

Body, Roof & Sealing

Roof sealant inspection, window and door seal check, skylight and vent seal condition, awning bracket check. The single best preventive measure against water ingress is annual seal inspection.

How Often Should You Service a Caravan?

Recommended service intervals depend on how often and how far you travel. The schedule below is a useful baseline. If you're unsure what your caravan needs, call us with the make, model and last service date, and we'll recommend the right service type.

Every 12 months

Annual service

Baseline for all caravans, including low-use and stored rigs, because bearings, seals and appliances degrade over time regardless of kilometres.

Before long trips

Pre-trip inspection

A short focused check covering brakes, bearings, tyres, gas operation, lights and hitch. Usually completed in 1 to 2 hours.

Every 10,000 km

Full service

Higher-use rigs benefit from a kilometre-based service on top of the 12-month schedule.

After extended storage (12+ months)

Return-to-use service

Full inspection before the first trip, including bearings, seals, gas compliance, water system flush and pump prime.

Why Caravan Owners Service With Focus RV

Caravan-Specific Workshop

We're not a general mechanic who happens to take caravans. Our team services caravans, campervans and motorhomes every day, and knows every system on a modern rig: 12V electrical, lithium banks, solar charging, water systems, gas, appliances, brakes and bearings.

Licensed Electrical & Gas

Gas and electrical compliance is checked during the service and signed off in-house. Certificates are issued with the service report. Most general mechanics have to sub-contract this work.

Warranty-Safe Servicing

As an authorised agent for multiple caravan and RV manufacturers, our servicing preserves your factory warranty. No worry about losing cover because the service was done by a workshop the factory doesn't recognise.

Written Service Report

Every service is followed by a written report detailing everything checked, adjusted, replaced or flagged. The report goes with you at hand-back, which helps at trade-in time and with any future warranty or insurance claim.

How a Caravan Service Booking Works

1. Book a Service Slot

Call (03) 8383 1026 or use the contact form. Tell us your caravan make, model and last-service date if you know it. We'll book the most suitable service type (annual, pre-trip, return-to-use) and confirm drop-off timing.

2. Drop-Off at Campbellfield

Drop the caravan at the workshop on the morning of your slot. Most annual services are completed same day unless additional repair work is needed.

3. Inspection & Service

Full inspection against the service checklist. Wear items adjusted or replaced. Any additional faults found (water ingress, brake wear beyond threshold, electrical fault) are flagged in a written variation before we act.

4. Report & Hand-Back

Road test, written service report and hand-back. Every compliance certificate (gas, electrical) is included with the paperwork.
