What a Caravan Refurbishment Is (and When You Need One)

A caravan refurbishment is a partial or full rebuild of the interior, systems or structure of a caravan, campervan or motorhome. Refurbishments are usually done on rigs that are 5 to 20 years old and need more than a quick fix: tired cabinetry, dated appliances, old wiring, worn upholstery or internal damage that has built up over time.

Refurbishments are different from fit-outs. A fit-out is a targeted upgrade (a new kitchen, a lithium battery bank, a lighting package). A refurbishment is a broader rebuild that usually touches multiple rooms and systems at once, and often involves stripping back to the shell so we can replace the bits you don't normally see.

Refurbishments suit grey-nomad travellers updating a van they've owned for 15 years, buyers of second-hand caravans who want to start fresh before heading away, people who've inherited a family caravan, and owners who want to refurbish before sale to lift the resale price. If it's worth rebuilding, we can refurbish it.

Partial, Mid-Scope and Full Refurbishments

Partial Refurbishment

One or two systems or rooms updated. Kitchen refresh, bathroom replace, bed reconfigure, or a combined flooring and upholstery swap. Typical timeline is 2 to 4 weeks. Popular with owners who want to refresh specific areas rather than rebuild the whole caravan.

Mid-Scope Refurbishment

Multiple rooms and systems updated in one build. Kitchen, bathroom, upholstery, flooring, lighting and electrical upgrade bundled together. Typical timeline is 4 to 8 weeks. Good fit for caravans 10 to 15 years old where the interior is tired but the structure is sound.

Full Refurbishment

Strip-out to the shell. New cabinetry, electrical, plumbing, gas, flooring, ceiling lining, upholstery and appliances. Typical timeline is 8 to 16 weeks. The right choice for caravans that need a full reset, or second-hand purchases where the new owner wants a clean slate.

Structural Restoration

Body panel, floor, wall and roof work alongside the interior rebuild. Usually paired with water damage repair. Structural restoration adds 4 to 6 weeks to a full refurbishment timeline, depending on what the strip-out uncovers.

Rooms and Systems We Refurbish

Pick one, pick several, or pick all of them. Every refurbishment is built around the rooms and systems you actually want updated, itemised in a written scope and quote.

Kitchens

Cabinetry replacement or refinish, benchtops, sinks, cooktops, rangehoods, under-bench storage and lighting. Most kitchen refurbishments include a lighting upgrade to LED and a full re-seal of the sink and cooktop.

Bathrooms

Shower base or shower replacement, basin swap, new toilet or cassette, wall lining or tiling, exhaust and venting. Wet-area sealing and waterproofing inspection is included on every bathroom job.

Bedrooms & Bed Zones

Bed base rebuild, new mattress, headboard, storage under and around the bed, reading lights and USB outlets. East-west or north-south bed reconfigurations if you want to change the layout.

Living & Dining

Dinette reupholstery, cabinetry refinish, lighting upgrade, TV mount and audio install. Dinette-to-bed conversions if you want extra sleeping capacity.

Flooring & Walls

Vinyl or plank flooring replacement (waterproof options available), wall lining refresh and ceiling panel replacement where damaged. Full floor replacement includes sub-floor inspection.

Electrical & Solar

Switchboard upgrade, lithium battery bank replacement, DC-DC charger install, solar array upgrade, LED lighting throughout and USB outlets. Certified by a licensed electrician.

Plumbing & Water

Tank replacement, pressure pump replacement, new taps and fittings, hot water system replacement, grey water rerouting and water filtration install.

Gas & Appliances

Cooktop replacement, fridge upgrade (compressor or 3-way), heater install or replace, gas compliance inspection and certification by a licensed Type A gas fitter.

Why Owners Choose Focus RV for Refurbishments

Written Scope Before Strip-Out

You approve the full scope, materials and cost in writing before we remove a single panel. Refurbishments uncover surprises in almost every build, especially on older rigs. We show you every one, explain what it means, and get your sign-off before anything changes in the invoice.

In-House Cabinetry and Joinery

All cabinetry is built in our Campbellfield workshop. No outsourced joinery, no quality drift across suppliers, no three-week wait for a cabinet that doesn't fit. The joiners building your cabinetry are the same team fitting it.

Licensed Electrical, Gas and Water

Every compliance trade is on site. Electrical, gas and plumbing sign-offs happen the same day the work finishes, and all certificates are handed over with the caravan.

One Team, One Timeline

Your refurbishment has one project lead, one phone number for progress updates, and one team accountable for the finished rig. You don't get shuffled between workshops or wait on handovers between contractors.

How a Caravan Refurbishment Comes Together

1. Inspection & Scope

Bring the caravan to the workshop. We walk through it together, note what you want updated, check what's underneath (water damage, rot, wiring age) and give you a frank picture of what's worth rebuilding. For second-hand purchases we'll often recommend a structural inspection before committing to scope.

2. Design & Material Selection

Cabinetry layout, colour palette, benchtop finish, flooring and upholstery selection. You approve the look and feel before we commit to materials. We'll show you samples and options that suit the caravan's age and value.

3. Written Quote

Itemised quote covering labour, materials, systems and timeline. If the caravan is old enough that surprises are likely, we agree a contingency allowance in writing so you're not shocked by a variation mid-build.

4. Build

Strip, rebuild, fit-out. Weekly progress updates and photos so you know where the build is up to. You're welcome to drop into the workshop anytime to see the work in progress.

5. Compliance & Hand-Back

Electrical, gas and water compliance signed off. Road test on the completed rig. Full walkthrough on collection, with every compliance certificate, parts warranty and service record handed over.

Refurbishment Cost and Timeline Guide

Refurbishment cost varies with scope, caravan age and what's uncovered during strip-out. Every project is quoted individually and in writing. The timeline ranges below are indicative based on our typical project mix.

Indicative timeline by scope

  • Partial refurbishment (1 to 2 areas): 2 to 4 weeks
  • Mid-scope refurbishment (multiple areas): 4 to 8 weeks
  • Full refurbishment (strip to shell): 8 to 16 weeks
  • Structural restoration with refurb: 12 to 20 weeks

Pricing brackets omitted pending client confirmation. Adding bracket pricing will lift feature-snippet eligibility for "caravan refurbishment cost" queries.

Refurbishments Across Melbourne and Australia

Our Campbellfield workshop is the hub for refurbishment projects. Melbourne customers drop off and collect at the workshop; interstate customers deliver at the start of the build and collect on completion. Because most refurbishments take multiple weeks, we often hold caravans in the workshop through the full build.
